Everything about Michael Billington Critic totally explained

Michael Billington (born on 16 November 1939 in Warwickshire, England) is a British author and journalist who has been the theatre critic of The Guardian newspaper, London, since 1971.

Early life

Billington attended the independent Warwick School. In 1958 he went up to St Catherine's College, Oxford. As a member of Oxford University Dramatic Society in 1959 he played "The Priest" in The Birds by Aristophanes, his only appearance as an actor. The following year he directed a production of The Bald Prima Donna which played in front of Harold Hobson, the most important drama critic of the time, but it was poorly received. He married in 1978.

Career

In 1961 The Liverpool Daily Post and Echo gave Billington his first job as a journalist, but in 1962 he left to organise publicity for the Lincoln Theatre Company at the Theatre Royal, Lincoln. His Fleet Street career was launched in 1965, when he became an arts reviewer at The Times. In 1968 he became the film reviewer for The Illustrated London News and The Birmingham Post. He moved from The Times to his current position as The Guardian's theatre critic in 1971. He is also the London Arts correspondent of The New York Times and drama critic of Country Life.
As a broadcaster Billington has written and presented television profiles of actors and contributed to many long-running arts programmes.
On 1 April 2008 his short-listed book State of the Nation: British Theatre Since 1945 (Faber ISBN 0571210341), won the Society for Theatre Research annual prize for theatre books published in 2007. The award was presented by Sir Donald Sinden.
